d'Engelze Volkplanting in Virginie door Iohan Smith Bezogt en verder uytgeset [John Smith Map of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc.]

Scarce map of the region from the Chesapeake to Long Island, intended to illustrate the Dutch Translation of Smith's Account of Virginia.

The map is loosely based upon John Smith's map, extending from the Chesapeake to Long Island, and including a number of place names including Jamaica, Breukelen, New Utrecht, Rariton, State I., the East River, Newport, etc., and even more place names in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.

An excellent addition for collectors of this region.

Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books, but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business. Hildebrand was a copper engraver and Boudewyn was a printer.
