Old color example of De Jode's rare map of the northern Balkans region, including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Istria, and part of Hungary.
The map is based upon an earlier map by Augustino Hirsvogelio.
De Jode's Speculum Orbis Terrarum was first published in 1578, with a second edition pubished by his son in 1593. While the work is generally superior to the maps of his contemporary, Abraham Ortelius, De Jode's atlas was not a commercial success, in part because it would appear that the privilege of publication of the atlas was delayed (which some attribute to the influence of Ortelius and his publisher).
De Jode's maps are scarce on the market, especially in such fine original color.
