Fine example of Jan Baptiste Vrients map of the Low Countries and environs, which first appeared in the 1608 edition of Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world.
The map is based upon a wall map of Philip Galle, published in Antwerp in 1575, of which no known example survives. The map is known to exist in 4 states, the first of which is known in a single copy. States 3 and 4 were issued separately post-1612. The present example is the second state, which includes the Vrients imprint.
The map is embellished with 17 coats of arms, elaborate cartouche and compass rose and naval scenes.
