Rare modern map of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), published by Weigel in Nuremberg.
The map credits Philips Baelde and Adrian Reland.
Philips Baelde or Father Philippus Baldaeus was a Dutch minister. He went to Jaffna during the Dutch period in Ceylon with an invading Dutch force. As the second European after Abraham Rogerius to visit Ceylon, he documented the life, language and culture of Tamil people, living in the north of the island.
Adriaan Reland was a noted Dutch Orientalist scholar, cartographer and philologist, who created a number of important maps of various regions in Asia.
