Engraved Proof Sheet. "Bancroft's, in scope, was probably the most important map yet produced by a publisher of the Pacific coast." - Streeter (TMW 1061)
Engraved proof of the 1867 edition of H.H. Bancroft's Map of the Pacific States.
The detail in Idaho and Montana is exceptional, with knowledge of the region progressing enormously since the 1863 first edition. The rush of prospectors following the Montana Gold Rush of 1864 led to an increased focus on the region.
Wyoming (here Dakota Territory) and the Yellowstone area are still poorly understood.
Interestingly, when producing this map for commercial purposes, Bancroft would have transferred the image to a lithographic stone, which was more durable for mass-printing. This map, however, was printed directly from the engraved plate and was used in Bancroft's shop as a proof.
Probably given by H.H. Bancroft to the Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley; Deaccessioned from the Bancroft Library; Warren Heckrotte
