Antique Sea Chart of the Chesapeake Region Published By The Leading Chartmaker of the Dutch East India Company
Attractive and highly detailed map of the Chesapeake region, extending south to Cape Henry and north to southern New Jersey and the Philadelphia area.
Van Keulen was one of the first chart makers to incorporate Augustine Hermann's landmark mapping of the Chesapeake in 1673 (known in only 3 surviving examples), even utilizing Hermann's symbols for the plantations along the Bay and various rivers. An early example of the Dutch reliance on English maps as source material, a trend which would increase with time, although ironically the commercial success of the Dutch Sea Atlases would in turn compel the English chart publishers to recycle the Dutch material in English Sea Atlases of the period. Van Keulen's map would also become the model for other Dutch charts of the period by Robyn and Lootsman.
An essential map for regional collectors.
