An Important Early Sea chart of the Western Indian Ocean

Rare early sea chart of the East Coast of Africa, the Indian Ocean and the West Coast of India, by Jacob and Casper Lootsman, one of the first commercial publishers of Dutch sea charts.

The Lootsman brothers chart illustrates and important part of the voyage from Europe to the East Indies, charting the western part of the Indian Ocean.

The chart was issued at a time when the Dutch East India Company had come to dominate trade in the Indian Ocean and the publication of commercial sea charts for the region. Many of the regions shown on the map were only then beginning to see direct commercial trading with the sea powers of Northern Europe.
