One of the earliest extant maps of the Region Showing Settlements in Patagonia

Fine large format cadastral map of a large section of Patagonia, specifically, of the Argentine Provinces of La Pampa, Rio Negro, Neuquen and Chubut, published by the Argentine Office of Land Information (Oficina de Informaciones de Tierras), one of the most important departments of Argentina's governmental offices, with virtually full access to available information.

The map appeared at a time when the provinces were virtually uninhabited, coming shortly after the so-called "Conquista del Desierto" a military campaign (1878-1885), which was aimed at taking the land of these provinces from different native populations, and prevent further the natives, known as Malones, from venturing further north into the Pampa.

The Provinces depicted became part of the Gobernacion de la Patagonia, and were subsequently divided into different territories, as illustrated here.

Issued periodically in the 1890s and thereafter, the map shows the land owners and/or lease holders of mining claims throughout the region.

Land owners in Yellow are the established proprietors, blue shows the newest proprietors, etc.
