Fascinating set of maps and projections illustrating the predicted path of a solar eclipse on July 25, 1748, based on calculations by Leonhard Euler, a renowned mathematician and astronomer.

The map sheet includes three hemisphere projections depicting the locations of the penumbra, or shadows caused by the eclipse, during three different time periods. Geographically the hemispheres are fairly rudimentary, with only major rivers and place names identified. In North America the South is labeled Florida Louisiana and the Pacific Northwest is labeled Nova Albion.

Created by George Moritz Lowitz and engraved by Ruprecht Adam Schneider.

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
