Rare Early Lafreri School Map of Hungary, Austria and the Balkans Region
Nice example of Paolo Forlani's rare map of Austria, Hungary, Transylvania and adjacent regions.
The map depicts the military activities in the region, between the Austro-Hungarian forces commanded by Maximilian II of Augsburg and the Turkish forces under the command of the sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, which ended with the siege of Szigetvár (September 8, 1566).
The map is derived from Giacomo Gastaldi's "Il dissegno particolare delle Regioni che sono da Costantinopoli, a Venetia, da Venetia a Viena et da Viena a costantinopoli" by Giacomo Gastaldi (1559, see Bifolco-Ronca, No. 228). Signed by Paolo Forlani, the map is copied directly from the map of Domenico Zenoi (Bifolco-Ronca No. 490), also issued in 15666.
Rarity
The map is extremely rare on the market and known in a single edition.
